Diary of a Homeschool Mom #5 One Hates Science and One Hates Reading

Have you ever tried to school your oldest and then her sister threw the world’s biggest fit because she wanted to do school, so you get her school, she does well, so you move her along, and suddenly she is mad that she has to actually do reading? Just me? Ya, that’s where I’m at right now. On top of that, my oldest has decided that she doesn’t like her science. Which is fair, because it talks to her like she is stupid. I know it’s first-grade science, but she already knew like half the course, and she was not thrilled to have to be schooled (again) on what plants are. She took the test for the plants and animal unit and passed without even doing the work, so there is that. I suppose this is the risk of switching to a new curriculum. I always worried they would be behind, so I guess it’s better they are ahead. I’m grateful for that at least.

Needless to say, I have some things to rework with the homeschool schedule. The science is an easy fix; she will just take her tests for the unit. My 4-year-old old pitching a fit about reading, though, that’s going to be a little more difficult. She can read; she is really good at it. The wanting to is what we are stuck on.

“Come do your reading,” I say.

“NO, I can’t read!” She yells

But she can, she knows she can, and when she does it, she is fine with it. She had picked up phonics like nobody’s business. I’m honestly at a loss, but we have been here before, so I guess this is nothing new. I am debating just reverting her to preschool, but I know she will be super bored. But eventually, it will click that she can read, and we will be right on track. If anyone has tips on getting a kid who knows how to read (kind of) to actually believe they can read, let me know. Maybe I just need to boost her confidence and tell her what a great reader she is.

Anyway, most of this week was spent resting up. We have allergies or something, our sinuses have been mildly stuffy, and it’s annoying. So we rested, I started a reading the bible in 30 days plan that I am failing. I think I can get back on track, though. Other than that, I look forward to another week of homeschooling and hope that these stuffy noses clear up, but I guess as long as it’s dry,y that won’t be the case.
